Japanese Utility Models Added to Derwent World Patents Index
April 16, 2008
Patent data on Derwent World Patents Index (DWPISM), File 351, is being extended to include registered Japanese Utility Models, further increasing the coverage of the growing patent activity in the Asia Pacific region. This is the latest addition to the DWPI database, with Chinese Utility Model Registrations added in October 2007.
Utility models are similar to patents, but require a less stringent process and offer a shorter protection period. Like conventional patents, utility models reveal important new technology advances and are a significant part of any prior art search.
The inclusion of the Japanese Utility Models provides the best access in English to Japanese patents, and further enhances the value of DWPI for prior art and patentability searches, with more complete coverage.
Thomson Scientific is the only provider to offer Japanese Utility Models with such currency and timeliness. The first batch of Japanese Utility Model records appeared in Derwent World Patents Index First ViewSM this week, beginning with records published on January 10, 2008. Once the editorial value add is completed, records are loaded into DWPI, with the corresponding record in DWPI First View removed.
Japanese Utility Model records will have the same level of detail as the existing Japanese patent records in DWPI, with documentation abstracts and deep indexing for records that are classified into Derwent sections A-Polymers and Plastics, B-Pharmaceuticals, C-Agriculture Chemicals, and E-General Chemicals.
All other sections will have DWPI alerting Abstracts with manual coding. Each of the Japanese patents in the DWPI member level (the individual patents in the patent family) will also include the machine translation of the author title, author abstract and first claim. For more information about DWPI on Dialog, please see the bluesheet.
Thomson Scientific is committed to providing you with the most comprehensive patent coverage available. We appreciate your business and trust that these enhancements will add value to your research.
