ESSENTIAL SCIENCE INDICATORS: THOMSON SCIENTIFIC EVALUATION TOOL DELIVERS MORE PRECISE MEASUREMENT

Philadelphia, PA USA-London UK - September 1, 2005 - Thomson Scientific, a business of The Thomson Corporation, today announced the enhancement of Essential Science IndicatorsSM. Essential Science Indicators enables researchers to conduct ongoing, quantitative analyses of research performance and track trends in science. Covering a multidisciplinary selection of more than 8,800 journals from around the world, this in-depth analytical tool provides data for evaluating the influence scientists, institutions, countries, and journals.

The enhanced Essential Science Indicators will deliver a number of refinements that allow for more precise and controlled measurements of research. Notable enhancements include:

• Field Rankings that allow users to see the average total of citations per paper in a field as whole — enabling users to assess the relationship between a researcher’s average citation rate and the citation average for their field.

• Users can now sort and filter results based on number of papers, citations, or cites per paper.

• The new version will allow for Boolean searches by title, researcher, journal, institution, and country enabling for more specialized searches and precise results.

• The new version also provides direct navigation to category rankings from results records to better highlight the relationships between data within Essential Science Indicators. From a record, users can now navigate directly to a researchers ranking within the field.

Essential Science Indicators provides insight into pivotal influences and research trends that had not been possible before,” said Henry Small, chief scientist of Thomson Scientific. “The latest enhancements make it that much more intuitive for users to evaluate the performance of researchers, papers, journals, institutions, and countries.”
