JISC INVESTS IN 35 YEARS OF WEB OF SCIENCE DATA
UK Institutions Now Have Free Access to Invaluable Retrospective Research to 1970
Philadelphia, PA, USA-London, UK - May 24, 2005 Today, Thomson Scientific announced that the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) has agreed to the terms of a five-year renewal for Web of Science® on behalf of UK higher education community. Thomson Scientific is a business of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC).
Previously JISC had access to Web of Science data back to 1980. The new JISC agreement extends their backfile access to 1970. The agreement provides academic institutions in the United Kingdom (UK) with free access to an additional six million articles from more than 8,700 of the world’s most influential journals, including complete bibliographic data, searchable author abstracts and cited references. In addition, the unique Web of Science feature—cited reference searching—allows users to navigate forward, backward, and through the multidisciplinary literature to uncover all the information relevant to their work.
“This is an important agreement for UK higher education,” said Lorraine Estelle, collections manager at JISC. “Funding of the backfiles will give the JISC community a much deeper search which will include information about all cited articles back to 1970s.”
“We are delighted that JISC has renewed for another five years and has also extended their backfile accessibility back to 1970,” said Keith MacGregor, executive vice president of Academic & Government Markets, Thomson Scientific. The JISC investment in Web of Science clearly demonstrates their commitment to extending the expert research being conducted in the UK, by enabling universities to provide their researchers with the tools necessary for world-class research.
