2007 Nobel Laureates

CHEMISTRY   -   ECONOMICS   -   MEDICINE   -   PHYSICS

  Physiology or Medicine:

The reasons for the selection last year were:
Capecchi: Interviewed in Science Watch, July/August 1993. All three joint winners of 2001 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. Capecchi and Smithies received Gairdner Award in 1993 (Smithies also won for another contribution in 1990). March of Dimes Annual Prize for 2005 to Capecchi and Smithies. Lasker's inclusion of Evans seems warranted, since the Nobel can go to three. Without gene targeting, the field would look very different - a good reason for the Nobel.

Mario R. Capecchi: One-third of the prize
"for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells"
Distinguished Professor of Biology and Human Genetics and Co-Chairman, Eccles Institute of Human Genetics, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT; and Howard Hughes Medical Investigator. Interviewed in Science Watch, July/August 1993. Joint winner (along with Evans & Smithies) of 2001 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. Winner of Gairdner Award in 1993. March of Dimes Annual Prize for 2005 (along with Smithies)

Oliver Smithies: One-third of the prize
"for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells"

 Physics

The reasons for the selection last year were:
Fert and Gruenberg made simultaneous discoveries and explained the effect. Fert presented with Gold Medal of the CNRS 2003. Gruenberg was awarded the German Future Prize for Technology and Innovation by the German Federal President in 1998, European Patent Office Inventor of the Year for 2005, and European Inventor of the Year 2006.

Professor, Institute of Solid-State Physics, Julich Research Center, Julich, Germany) Awarded the German Future Prize for Technology and Innovation by the German Federal President in 1998. European Patent Office Inventor of the Year for 2005.
Distinction: European Inventor of the Year 2006.

 Chemistry:

Gerhard Ertl: "for his studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces" Professor emeritus, Dept. of Physical Chemistry, Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin, Germany
ESI Rank: Ertl is ranked 561st by total citations in Chemistry in the current ESI. 6,523 scientists are listed in ESI/Chemistry by total cites in the current ESI – this is the top 1%. Ertl ranks in the top 1/10th of 1% by total cites over the last 10 years.
Ertl is also listed in D. Pendlebury’s privately circulated email on 50 most cited chemists of 1981-1997: (Ertl is 46th by total citations) HIGHLYCITED.COM
