All Six Universities that Comprise the National Alliance Will Benefit

Sydney, Australia - 07/10/2007

Thomson Scientific, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information solutions to the worldwide research and business communities, today announced that it has reached an agreement with the Innovative Research Universities Australia (IRUA) to provide its National Citation Reports and University Science Indicators to its six member universities. Members of the group are Flinders University, Griffith University, La Trobe University, Macquarie University, Murdoch University, and The University of Newcastle.

"The National Citation Report has provided Griffith University with a high level of analysis exceeding our expectations,” said Tony Sheil, Senior Manager Research Policy, Griffith University. “In addition to deep analysis and benchmarking of research performance, the National Citation Reports enables excellent insights into the nature of the University's collaborations with other institutions and researchers, as well as publishing patterns by author, journal, field and other variables."

The National Citation Report is an electronic database of a nation's journal articles in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The dataset contains all standard bibliographic information for each paper indexed plus year by year and total citation counts for each paper. These data, in this database structure, allow virtually any type of analysis of output of papers and influence in terms of citations or citations per paper.

University Science Indicators 1981 through the current year is an easy-to-use database of research performance measures on major research universities. Based on unique and authoritative publication and citation statistics of ISI, University Science Indicators contains the number of ISI-indexed papers from each university and the number of times the papers were cited through the current year.  Users can analyze the data for each year, for the entire period, the most recent five-year period or in five-year moving windows of papers published and cited for one or any group of universities.
“Currently, Australian Universities are preparing for the 2008 Research Quality Framework process which highlights the importance of tracking research performance,” said Jeroen Prinsen, Director of Sales, Thomson Scientific ANZ. “Organizations like IRUA appreciate Thomson Scientific’s ability to partner with its customers and support them with all the right tools for their research evaluation studies.”
