THOMSON SCIENTIFIC PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES TO DEVELOP NEW SOLUTION FOR ASSESSING JOURNAL USE
Philadelphia, PA USA-London UK - June 22, 2005 Following extensive review with academic librarians on the issues they face in managing their journal collections, Thomson Scientific (a business of Thomson Corporation) announced today that it will begin deployment of a unique, full-perspective journal utilization solution in 2005. This journal management resource is being developed in partnership with top institutions including Dartmouth College, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Drexel University, and University of Melbourne.
The new resource will give institutions a complete picture of journal utilization, answering such important questions as: Do publisher usage reports offer a complete picture of journal usage? What is the relationship between ‘Impact Factor’ and the influence of a journal at an institution? Where are an institution’s researchers publishing, and which journals are they citing?
The utilization solution will gather all journal usage data at an institution, and place that data in the context of institutional publishing and citation patterns to provide a 360° snapshot of journal use from the researcher’s perspective, as well as the influence that institution’s researchers are having on research worldwide based on their success as published authors.
“Thomson Scientific has set the standard for journal utilization metrics worldwide with respected evaluation solutions such as, Journal Citation Reports® and Essential Science IndicatorsSM,” said Jim Pringle, vice present of development at Thomson Scientific. “Now, based on feedback from librarians around the world, we are developing a new resource to arm librarians with more journal utilization data that has ever been gathered in one place.”
