Dear Quantum2 Member...

It is hard to believe the first quarter of the year is already gone.  As we enter the next quarter, thoughts of the upcoming "conference season" will be foremost in many minds — how to plan which ones to attend, and having done that, what sessions to go to. To help you decide, this issue offers insight into a range of professional learning tools and events you may find useful.

In this issue:

Upcoming QuantumWorkshop — London

Quantum2 members in London will be happy to note that the next workshop to take place at our Thomson Scientific office location will be on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. The topic is "Scenario Planning for Information Services," which builds on last year's Strategic Planning session. You do not need to have attended the last session to benefit, as we will be giving information managers insight into how to use scenario development as a planning tool to answer the "what if...?" questions that involve important issues and large external influences that impact strategic decision making.

Register for this free professional development workshop.

Quantum2 at SLA Annual Conference

The Special Libraries Association (SLA) Annual Conference takes place in the "Emerald City" of Seattle from June 15-18, 2008. Many of you may be travelling to Seattle to network and take advantage of the learning experiences (not to mention the coffee, arts and "grunge" music — other things the city is noted for!). As ever, Quantum2 continuing education courses will be available as part of the learning, so make a note to attend at least one of the two scheduled courses. You do not have to be a member of any specific division to attend. To find out more, see below.

Quantum2 Topic of the Month - The Changing Environment for Information Professionals

"We live in a world of change — and nowhere is this more obvious than in the world of information and communications," said Janice Lachance, CEO of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). Lachance spoke these words at a recent industry event to get information professionals to think about some of the key technical and social changes impacting our environment.

This observation is highly pertinent for all functions in a general business environment, but for information professionals in particular, how do we make that great shift to reinvent the delivery of information services?

Spotlight on Quantum2 InfoStar — Ashima Aggarwal

"Managing internal and external knowledge is the backbone of any company," said Ashima Aggarwal, who does just that as the Knowledge Manager for Evalueserve, a global research and analytics firm. Ashima's team does more than just provide information to her company's researchers - they drive various initiatives aimed towards different buckets of the knowledge cycle.

To find out how Ashima has successfully driven the creation of a knowledge management department in her organization, read her profile.

Nominate a Quantum2 InfoStar

It is time again to nominate an information professional you know (maybe yourself!), who is an inspiring example of creativity and innovation. InfoStars are enthusiastic and positive about the value and future of information services regardless of their level within their organizations, and act as catalysts for change to champion and support their information center. Through their example and initiatives, their stories enable them to serve as role models for others.

Thomson Scientific is now seeking nominations in North America for the InfoStar Awards, to be announced at the forthcoming SLA Annual Conference in Seattle in June.

Nominate an InfoStar.
