A newsletter of the Dialog leadership development program for information professionals

Dear Quantum2 Member...
The holiday season is upon us and it wraps up what has been a busy year. Many of you likely have been through organizational change and restructuring, or perhaps have been working hard to quantify the value of your information centre or state your value propositions. During such periods, it can be motivating to hear about other colleagues who have achieved success in meeting these challenges, and from whom we can draw inspiration. Some of these role models, or InfoStars, were recently honored at the recent Online Information Conference and Exhibition, held November 29-December 1 in London, UK. Read on for their stories.

Online Information 2005

The Olympia Exhibition Hall in London was the hub of the information industry last week as the annual Online Information Conference & Exhibition was held from November 29 to December 1. As usual, Dialog was visible, this time as part of the overall Thomson Scientific presence.

Quantum2 program activities were again a feature of the Dialog offering, with Libby Trudell and Liz Blankson-Hemans presenting workshops as part of the free Information Masterclass and Career Development sessions. Four Quantum2 InfoStars were honored in a reception at the Thomson Scientific booth November 30, and the annual Roger K. Summit Scholarship was awarded to Margaret Pickton of Loughborough University at the Thomson Scientific/Dialog Reception held November 30at the Kensington Roof Gardens.

For more about Dialog’s activities at Online, please read the accompanying press releases at www.dialog.com/pressroom.

2005 International InfoStars

The four InfoStars honored during Online Information are profiled below. Three of the four were present to receive their awards at a special recognition reception on Tuesday, November 30, at the Thomson Scientific stand. The International InfoStars for 2005 are:

  • Rikke Andreasen, Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Denmark
  • Colin Davies, National Health Service, United Kingdom
  • Amanda Franken, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, South Africa
  • Judith Shiloni, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Israel

Rikke AndreasenRikke is the director of the Corporate Library & Information Centre of the International PharmaScience Centre of Ferring Pharmaceuticals A/S, in Denmark. By organising and conducting a thorough user-needs analysis and then developing a customized content solution based on the study's findings, coupled with extensive training, and the development of an alerting service for her constituents, Ms. Andreasen has helped raise her centre's profile. She also has played a lead role in facilitating knowledge sharing in this content solution by helping to mesh internally produced and stored research with information available through external online services.

Colin DaviesColin is a project manager, National Library for Health in the North West region of the National Health Service (NHS), England. He spearheaded a successful collaboration using eLinking to expand Inter-Library loans within the health service. Now, electronic databases, electronic journals and articles from paper journals are all available through a single online portal. As a result of Davies' and his colleagues' efforts, health professionals across the north west of England can now access an expanded range of targeted health and scientific research from their offices and medical facilities, and therefore provide better patient care.

Amanda FrankenAmanda is a senior manager at the Library and Information Centre of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, in South Africa. She is proactive in marketing her centre's capabilities throughout her firm, especially to senior management. PriceWaterhouse Cooper's Information Centre handles traditional library functions as well as leading in the development of information solutions and consultative resources for both the firm and its clients. Franken has also established a "knowledge management forum" within her firm, bringing together different individuals involved with various aspects of information management. She has held leadership roles in different professional associations in South Africa, such as the Special Library & Information Services (SLIS) group, as well as winning a Senior Information Specialist of the Year award in 2003.

Judith ShiloniJudith is the manager of the Information Centre at Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, in Israel. She provides a full range of information management services to her company's various departments while also mentoring other information specialists. She worked closely with Teva's information technology department to launch a new site on the company's intranet that features training resources, the ability to e-mail requests for research assistance and numerous other options. Ms. Shiloni also has worked collaboratively with cross-organizational Teva teams to implement corporate information policy.
