SLA CONFERENCE NEWS

The 2004 SLA Annual Conference for Dialog meant highlighting a range of new services and enhanced products, along with the annual offering of sponsored events and Quantum2 Continuing Education (CE) workshops.
Quantum2 CE workshops included Creating Brand Identity, Assessing your Business and Strategic Competencies and ROI Preparation and Defense, which drew particularly positive feedback from participants. Additional sponsorships to these CE courses included the Leadership Development Institute, Hot Topic Series, the Networking Reception and Conference Web site, as well as various chapter and division programs.
Honored at SLA were four new InfoStars for 2004 in North America. The InfoStar award is given to information professionals whose creativity and innovation in raising the level of their services within their organizations are inspirational to others. The recipients are Marcia Schemper-Carlock of Verizon Communications, Michelle Burylo of Airproducts & Chemicals, and a joint award to Marygrace Record and Anitha Steventon of Wyeth Consumer Healthcare.
A special highlight of the conference was the Dialog Customer Appreciation Party featuring The Four Tops, which drew over 1,300 attendees.

QUANTUM2 TOPIC OF THE MONTH
***********************************
The conference season has just passed in many locations, and aside from SLA, a recent one was the COMiNFO 2004 in Frankfurt and the parallel DGI Online Conference for Information Specialists from June 15-17. The Quantum2 message could not be more pertinent than at these two conferences. A common theme running throughboth conferences was the importance of proving return on investment (ROI), and being more proactive in building and communicating our services by enhancing our internal relationships with stakeholders and connecting our services and processes to organizational bottom line.
The DGI Online Conference featured a closing panel discussion on the topic of "Information Professional in 2011 - What will be the future of the Information World in 2011 and the future role of the Information Professional?" The takeaway message from the discussion was the need for Information Professionals to take the initiative to propel their services to the fore of the corporate agenda, embrace challenges and work with the so-called "competition" in a spirit of co-operation and enterprise, aligned with an awareness and understanding of the organizational goals to make a more meaningful contribution to the bottom line and survive beyond 2011.
No doubt, this message resonates with all information professionals worldwide, so "carpe diem" (seize the day) is my closing point.
