1. Searching Derwent Innovations Index version 4.0

Conducting patent searches on Derwent Innovations Index is easy. You simply select a date range or a scientific or technological area of interest, then conduct a Form Search, a Cited Patent Search, or an Expert Search. Or take advantage of the new quick search screen.

Form Search—simple, precise patent searching

Using the Form Search function you can search patents quickly and easily by:

  • Title
  • Abstract
  • Assignee, Company Codes and Inventor(s)
  • DWPI Class and IPC
  • Manual Codes
  • Patent Number, Publication Date and Priority Date

Cited Patent Search—with no complicated cross-referencing

Searching cited patents is a fast and accurate way to find prior art and emerging developments. Using Derwent Innovations Index version 4.0 you can search by:

  • Cited Patent Number
  • Cited Assignee and Assignee Code
  • Cited Inventor
  • Cited Primary Accession Number (PAN)

Expert Search—for experienced patent specialists

Patent search specialists can perform command-line style queries via the Expert Search screen.

  • Simple field tags and Boolean operators can be used to combine search fields and create detailed, focused search strategies
  • Search queries can be combined for added flexibility and to refine your research
  • Search queries are automatically saved for re-use or to combine with other queries
  • You can save the entire Search History at the end of a session, providing useful details of searches performed and results retrieved on a specific topic for re-use at a later date, or for internal or client project tracking


2. Reviewing your search results

After you have conducted a search, the results are presented in an easy-to-read title list, with hyperlinks to the full DWPI patent record.


3. Displaying individual records

From your search query’s results screen, you can link to the full DWPI record.

Each record contains:

  • an expert-written patent title that summarises what the invention is and why it is novel, allowing you to quickly identify the most important patents
  • a concise abstract written in clear, jargon-free English by our experts, detailing the main claim, uses and advantages of the new technology
  • patent family details, gathering together all worldwide documents relating to the same invention, so you don’t waste time trawling through identical records
  • bibliographic information summarising the patent history including where, when and by whom it was patented


4. Broaden your research by linking from search results

Derwent Innovations Index includes intuitive links to:
 

  • Citations

    Using Derwent Innovations Index, you can link directly from patent records to cited and citing patents. This enables you to extend your research without the need for complicated patent search techniques and cumbersome, complex cross-referencing.

    Links to cited patents help you quickly and accurately find prior art and emerging developments. Links to patent citations are invaluable for competitive intelligence; they make it easier to monitor rapidly changing areas of technology.
     
     
  • Original patent documents

    Having viewed the value-added patent record and linked directly to cited or citing patents, you can extend your research even further by accessing the original patent document, via optional links to a specially customized version of the Thomson Patent Store.
     
     
  • Related scientific literature

    You also have the option of searching related scientific literature through citation links to Web of Science®*, providing you with a complete picture of technological innovation and scientific advancements. Through the multidisciplinary Web of Science, users can easily find current and retrospective information relevant to their work from nearly 8,500 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world.

5. Exporting search results

Derwent Innovations Index records are easy to select for print, export or email delivery, enabling swift and efficient dissemination of research throughout an organisation. You can select records for download as you search, then print, file save or export them. You can email results to yourself or the recipient of your choice.
