Philadelphia, PA USA-London UK - December 10, 2007 - Thomson Scientific,
part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX:
TOC) and leading provider of information solutions
to the worldwide research and business communities,
has awarded the 2007 Roger K. Summit Scholarship
for the Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and Africa
region to Mehrnoush Mozaffarian, a doctoral student
from University College, London. The announcement
was made at a special ceremony at the Online Information
conference on December 6 in London.
The Roger K. Summit Scholarship is awarded twice
annually, one each to a graduate student enrolled
in an accredited library or information sciences
program in the Americas and one in Europe, the Middle
East, Asia Pacific and Africa.
Mozaffarian is working toward Master of Philosophy
and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Library, Archive
and Information Studies, focusing her research on
a gender study of UK Academic Scientific Productivity.
She conducted similar research while attending Azad
University in Iran, where she earned a Master's
Degree in Library & Information Sciences in 2006.
Mozaffarian used ISI Web of KnowledgeSM
to conduct her research and received the highest
possible marks for her dissertation — the first
person to earn that distinction.
The scholarship is named in honor of Dialog founder
Roger K. Summit, a pioneer in developing the technology
behind online information retrieval. The 2007 international
scholarship award drew applicants from a number of
countries, with the three finalists being from the
UK, China and South Africa. Scholarship winners must
demonstrate proficiency in using Dialog®,
academic achievement, and interest in the field of
electronic information services.
"We're pleased to award this year's
scholarship to Mehrnoush," said Libby Trudell,
senior vice president, market development. "She
is an outstanding student doing important research,
and has demonstrated her skill in using information
services to achieve her goals. We are impressed with
her passion for research."
In addition to her studies, Mozaffarian has work
experience in the information field. As an information
document controller at INPEX, a Japanese Oil company,
she was responsible for classifying, cataloguing
and distributing documents. Prior to that, she worked
for Iran 's Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology
as a database purchasing supervisor.
