THOMSON HONOURS TAIWAN'S LEADING SCIENTISTS
Taiwan - 15 November 2006 Thomson Scientific, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information solutions to the worldwide research and business communities, today announced it has honoured eight leading professors with the first ‘Thomson Citation Laureate Award' presented in Taiwan. This accolade is awarded to top Taiwanese research professors in recognition of their pioneering achievements and influential contribution to international research and development (R&D).
The prestigious Thomson Citation Laureate Award is presented based on the number of citations that an academic research paper has, reflecting its impact and influence on a given subject and the importance attributed to it by subsequent research.
In the last eight years, the number of citations accredited to Taiwanese R&D practitioners has seen Taiwan rise to a ranking of 18th in the world, and 5th in Asia, by number of papers, behind Japan, China, India and South Korea. Taiwan currently ranks 2nd in Asia by citations per paper, behind Japan but ahead of China and India. These Awards reflect Taiwan's standing in the global R&D community.
Renowned for R&D in chemistry, biology and biochemistry, Taiwan has seen a shift in direction with clinical medicine, engineering and physics currently leading as the top three fields in terms of "number of papers".
Taiwan has also recorded a 30% growth in the number of patents filed between 2000 and 2005 while Japan has remained steady. High tech areas such as optics and telecommunications have emerged as stronger technology areas for unique inventions in Taiwan in 2005.
The Awards were part of the Thomson Taiwan Research Day and were presented by David Brown, executive vice president of Corporate Markets, Thomson Scientific; with guest speaker Dr. Ts'ui-jung Liu, vice president, Academia Sinica addressing the attendees during an afternoon ceremony held at the Academia Sinica in Taipei. Keynote speeches were also made by Dr. Huang Mu-Hsuan of National Taiwan University and Dr. Hung Wen-Chi from the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL). The event was attended by over 100 of the winners' industry peers from leading research institutions and libraries.
David Brown said: "Asia Pacific is booming, and has a growing desire for the latest technological and scientific advances driven by both the need to enhance a businesses bottom line and the consumer's desire for the latest product or technology. Taiwan is continuing to show itself as a leader in R&D, specifically in the Agricultural Sciences, Geosciences and Mathematics fields. The impact of its research is an indicator of its continuing innovation and pursuit for developing the latest technological, pharmaceutical and scientific break-throughs."
Mark Garlinghouse, vice president of Thomson Scientific Asia Pacific, added: "Both academic and commercial institutions recognised the importance of patents and scientific literature citations. During the past eight years, Thomson has forged strong relationships with leading R&D practitioners including those at the National Taiwan University and Academia Sinica in Taiwan. We look forward to developing our relationships further with Taiwan's top institutions in the future."
The Thomson Citation Laureate Awards are also presented in countries such as Australia, Denmark, Brazil and Mexico and most recently in India in July 2006.
